Around the House
with Joel and Lauren Cline
Rachel Oesch

Size, convenience, and location are what Joel and Lauren Cline appreciate most about their Ooltewah apartment. The twentysomething couple moved into Mountain Oaks five months ago, attracted by its location, which they describe as "just out of town, but not too far away."

"We're on the outskirts of the city, away from the traffic, yet close enough to get anywhere in 10 minutes," said Joel, proprietor of Cline Pools. His wife agreed, adding that "it's small, has everything we need, and has a maintenance-free lawn. It's nice to come in and just enjoy the house."

Joel prepares to clean his grill on their back patio. "I never grilled much because my dad always did it. But someone gave me this one, so I'm getting into the grilling world."

Lauren in the kitchen, where she specializes in pastas and pot roast. "She cooks pretty good," according to her husband. A native of Chattanooga, Lauren is a hair stylist at New Attitudes.

The couple, married for a year and a half, shares a romantic moment in their sunroom, looking through their wedding album.

A self-described animal-in-general person, Lauren plays with Jolie, their Boston terrier. "I'm allergic to cats, so we ended up with a dog," said Joel.

"I don't know if I necessarily have a decorating style," Lauren said. "I wanted to have something that would go with both of our tastes." Their living room is a pleasing arrangement of dark furniture, soothing plants, and such small touches as candles and wedding photos.
